Rep. Stewart’s Statement on Updated CDC Guidance

Today, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated their mask-wearing guidance. Congressman Chris Stewart (R-UT) released the following statement.

“The CDC is now recommending that we wear masks indoors, and that our children wear masks in schools, regardless of our vaccination status. This flip-flop is just the most recent, and perhaps the most egregious, demonstration of the Biden Administration’s inability to effectively combat the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Public health officials nationwide have been clear since day one: The vaccine is the best protection against COVID-19. Today, 90 percent of seniors are fully vaccinated, as well as 50 percent of the general population. I have also been consistent from the beginning: In consultation with their doctor, Utahns should get this vaccine. Today, 51 percent of our population has received at least one dose, and 44 percent are fully vaccinated.

“These numbers should be celebrated, and we should continue to build public confidence in the vaccine’s effectiveness. The CDC’s unnecessary guidance only serves to erode that confidence. Consistent and science-based public health guidance, as well as a respect for personal liberty, will allow us to continue making progress. If you are vulnerable to the virus or particularly concerned, you are free to get vaccinated, wear a mask, or stay at home. Freedom is the answer – not the heavy hand of government.”
