Contact: Allison.Barker@mail.house.gov Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah), released the following statement, opposing the President's proposal to use military force in Syria: “After receiving the classified briefings provided by the White House, and allowing President Obama to present his case, I have decided against authorizing military strikes in Syria. I will be encouraging others to join me in this vote. “ “Like all Americans, I was shocked by the Syrian president’s use of chemical weapons. I recognized the potential threat to regional stability these actions might have created. But I also understand that military intervention comes with considerable risks. In order to justify these risks, we need the support of the American people, any proposed action must be in our national interest, and that the President has a responsibility to prove that he is capable of reacting to the crisis in an effective manner. I do not believe that any of these thresholds has been met.” ### |
